Ascendant

Ascendant

The ascendant (rising sign, Asc) is the zodiac degree on the eastern horizon at birth. It anchors the natal-wheel at the left (9 o’clock in many charts) and defines the cusp of the 1st house.

The rising sign colors first impressions, bodily temperament, and the lens through which the native meets the world. It does not replace the sun sign; it is the chart’s orientation to location and moment.

Accurate ascendant degree requires birth time. Without it, house positions and the midheaven are uncertain, though planetary sign placements may still be used. The ascendant pairs with the descendant (7th-house cusp) as an axis of self and other. Opens house-1; reading order: wheel-reading-order. Without birth time, houses and midheaven are uncertain.
